Environmentally Conscious IBM

IBM, International Business Machines, has been around since the early nineteen hundreds, although it hasn't been since recently that they have focused their mark on being a more environmentally conscious corporation.

This two thousand and ten, top twenty largest Fortune company has thousands (approximately four hundred thousand) of direct employees and even more brokered employees to sell their goods and services.  IBM produces some of the newest and coolest technology out there each year.  Their employees have earned such esteemed awards as Nobel Prizes, Turing Awards, National Medals of Science and more.  They are located in over two hundred countries, and have every type of employee from scientists to salespeople.

One would think that with all of these employees, and all of these locations, being ‘green' would not fall on the
top of the priority list - But it does.  IBM was a slow start to turning their company green in the beginning of the green wave.  But now, IBM was listed in two thousand and ten as the number one green company in Newsweek.

How did IBM become a more environmentally conscious company overall?  In nineteen seventy-one, IBM created a corporate policy on the protection of the environment.  IBM made a statement that within the past few years alone their hazardous waste decreased by over forty percent.  Since the late nineteen eighties, the amount of hazardous waste has decreased by over an outstanding ninety percent.

What made up most of IBM's waste?  Most of the waste collected was that of leftover operations for manufacturing.  Now, instead of simply disposing of this waste, IBM has decided to collect, recycle, reuse chemicals within the products.  IBM also developed Green Sigma which was made to reduce its own carbon footprint.

Because of the changes made by IBM, the United States Environmental Fund noted the company as one of the ‘Top Twenty Best Workplaces for Commuters'.  This award was handed to the Fortune 500 company in two thousand and five.  Winners of this award had to provide their employees with outstanding benefits for commuting that reduced the overall air and traffic pollution of the earth.

Also on their list of environmental duties at hand, IBM is currently developing affordable solar power energy for the global market.  These low costs methods were the ideas of both IBM and Tokyo Ohaka  Kogya Co. LTD.  In making solar power more affordable, it will be able to be used by many more, saving our other resources for future generations.

IBM  has made large strides in the arena of being environmentally conscious.  It will be interesting to see what this company strives for next.
