MTNL BSNL blocking VOIP calls?

Bookmark and Share
Since morning I have noticed that all calls made via VOIP service to India landlines, especially Mumbai landlies are blocked. The call goes through to the number, someone picks up the call but we can't listen to them. Of course since the call gets terminated we are charged for the call. Its' not the VOIP provider's fault, since they are getting charged once the call is terminated. They need to pay call termination charge to their VOIP backbone.

The funny thing is it works for all mobiles. I didnt try BSNL mobile though.

So what's up with MTNL and BSNL blocking VOIP Calls? In fact we tried making calls via calling cards but its still the same. Even calling cards can't place calls through to India landline. I have confirmed this with 5 people till now. Everyone was based out of india and were trying to call a mumbai landline number.

Is this a start of a possible outright ban on all VOIP calls terminated in India? We covered a story about how India is planning a ban on VOIP calls some time back, however we never thought it would actually take effect.

Can anyone else confirm this? Please post comments telling us your issues and if you see this issue across India or any specific city.
