How To Add PPTP Or L2TP Ports On Windows Server 2003

Bookmark and Share
In this article you'll learn how to add PPTP or L2TP ports on Windows Server 2003 operating system. To accomplish this, just perform the actions below. This article is written for LAN administrators, Windows Administrators and students preparing Windows server 2003 certifications.

Step 1: Open Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console).

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on Routing and Remote Access

Step 3: Click on the name of your Server.

Step 4: Click on Ports.

Step 5: Click with the right button of your mouse on Ports, and then click on Properties.

Step 6: In the dialog box "Ports Properties", click on either WAN Miniport (PPTP) or WAN Miniport (L2TP), and then click on Configure.

Step 7: In the Maximum ports area, enter the number of ports, and then click on OK.

Take into account that you should be a member of the Administrators group in order to execute the following procedure. It is suggested to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of a member of the Administrators group.

You cannot define the number of PPTP ports to 0. Clear the check boxes Remote access connections (inbound only) and Demand-dial routing connections (inbound and outbound) to disable PPTP. Moreover, when you increase the number of ports for WAN Miniport (PPTP) or WAN Miniport (LT2P) from less than 1000 ports to more than 1000 ports, you must reload your server to apply the modification.

On Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, and Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, you can create up to 1,000 PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) ports and up to 1,000 L2TP (To bush-hammer Two Tunneling Protocol) ports. On the other hand, Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, can accept only one VPN (virtual Private Network) connection at the same time. Moreover, Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, can accept up to 1,000 simultaneous VPN sessions. If 1,000 VPN customers are connected, the additional VPN attempts will be refused as much as the number of active VPN connections does not go down below 1,000.
