It is practical to read a detailed Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT review before purchasing the latest Garmin GPS device. Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT is one of the latest global positioning system devices launched by Garmin. Although the features are similar to that of Nuvi 1450LMT, the 1490LMT has two advantages: it has BlueTooth wireless technology and it comes in the color black. In other aspects, these two units are the same when it comes to display, features, and materials.

First, we look closer into the Bluetooth wireless technology. This feature allows you to integrate a compatible Bluetooth cell phone into the Nuvi 1490LMT, letting you talk with your family, friends, or colleagues hands-free through the built-in microphone speaker. However, since Nuvi 1490LMT do not have voice-activated command features, you must dial the number using the numbers on the touchscreen and lightly tap the display when answering calls.

Next, we look into the meaning behind LMT. It simply means Lifetime Map and Traffic as Garmin provides lifetime and free-of-charge updates to maps and traffic information. If you live in an area where traffic jams are quite often, this is a pretty useful tool as it also provides information on the nearest traffic situation like road constructions. However, such information is not always available and updated, and the map is only updated annually although you can download it four times a year.

The screen provides a generous 5-inch display with brightly colored icons and a white backlight. It displays the map and 'Where to?' options as well as volume and tools options. The map automatically pops when you start driving. If you want to receive traffic information you must connect the device to the car using the original cable. Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT can be put on a flat surface unlike other GPS devices from other manufacturers.

You can change the way the map is displayed like changing map detail to 'Most' and the map view to '3-D' (2-D is also available). To show the routes you've already taken, select 'Show' in the Trip Log menu. The normal navigation screen only shows 2 items: the direction you're driving and speed. In the detailed map, it shows four items but consumes at least half of the screen, limiting the map view to 2.5 inch.

The Where Am I? function is quite useful, especially if you are running errands or into an emergency. It displays the street you are in, the nearest hospital, fire station, police station, and gas station.

EcoRoute feature allows you to save time, fuel, and energy while driving. With ecoRoute, Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT reviews the gas you've spent, how many miles you've driven, and the cost of your recent travel.

The lane assist feature assists you when you need to change lanes to get to your specified destination. It provides precise road signs and prompts you to change lanes at specific intervals.

You can also take your Garmin Nuvi when traveling via public transit. Just download the cityXplorer and navigate to your destination by walking or riding a public transport bus, or train. You can even use it when you're riding a bike.

Track the routes and roads you've already covered using the TrackLog. When available, it leaves a line that follows you wherever you go, like a breadcrumb trail. This way, you don't need to cover the same route again especially if you are delivering goods or just wandering around the area.

Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT is not as high-end as other latest GPS devices. However, it does the job in a pretty accurate way. The device also comes with a picture viewer, Garmin Lock (anti-theft feature), calculator, world travel clock, and currency and unit converter.
