Wireless routers and wireless access points are different devices the way they function and the security features they support. Wireless routers are powered with many security features to block the internet threats and the NAT function for address translation to allow you share a single internet connection. NAT feature also helps to hide your private / internal network from the public network / the internet. While the wireless access points are mostly used to extend the wired networks wirelessly. What this Product Does

ASUS designs a new EZ Switch to provide three different operation modes (as the wireless router, wireless access point, or as the wireless repeater) which is easy to change by only one touch. The device is powered by the latest wireless 802.11N standard.

To share your broadband internet connection in home, you need to configure the device as the wireless router by changing the EZ Switch to router position. As the router, the ASUS RT-N13U supports the dual firewall feature (NAT and SPI). Network Address Translation (NAT) helps you hide the internal network from the public (internet) network. The Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) is the router feature that inspects the incoming packets from the internet more carefully and thoroughly to detect any types of threats.

If you have already had a secure wired network and would like to extend it wirelessly, you can configure the RT-N13U as the wireless access point. There are many modems with built-in firewall (router) enabled which by default is a secured network from the internet threats (with the NAT and SPI features). Identify your existing modem in home if it includes the firewall / router function. To extend the network wirelessly, you just need a wireless access point. With RT-N13U, you need to change the EZ switch to the access point position.

AiDisk feature

The good thing with this ASUS RT-N13U is that the AiDisk feature with the ASUS DDNS service that allows you to create an FTP server with a meaningful and easy to recognize like ftp: //your-name.asuscomm.com instead of a hard to remember IP addresses or URLs. With this FTP server you can attach a USB disk to the router and share the files with friends easily no matter when and where the user is. With the bundled AiDisk quick installation guide included in the box, users can rest easy and not worry about complicated settings in creating the FTP server with a meaningful name.

ASUS RT-N13U wireless access point router includes a USB 2.0 port that can used to connect to the multifunction printer. You do not need a dedicated PC as the PC-print server that must be on all the time. Attach the multifunction printer to the router and let the ASUS Network Printer Setup program to run, users can now easily print and scan via the network.

In home, you can configure the RT-N13U as the router or as the wireless access point (depends on your modem feature). For example with your existing Surfboard SBG5101 cable modem, you need to configure the RT-N13U as the wireless router.
